Whether a big or small role, Deaf actors are getting a lot more opportunities to rise to popularity and begin acting careers. And you know what, a newly released Marvel movie, Eternals, has a Deaf woman identified as Lauren Ridloff who played as superhero Makkari. This movie was released on November 5, 2021 and was directed by Chloe Zhao. As per Wikipedia, Eternals is a superhuman race, and Makkari is among the members . Ridloff is the first Deaf actor to play in a superpower movie. According to the New York Times, Ridloff had shown filmmakers tips about how to work with a Deaf actor.
It is really amazing that the film industry is giving Deaf actors more opportunities and using American Sign Language in their movies. Deaf people are shining through and they're marking their achievements. It does not solely bring triumph and collaborative moments for the Deaf people, but most importantly, these films are opening the door for more exposure as well as awareness of Deaf people as well as the community. More and more Deaf individuals are on the media and quickly becoming influencers.
